The Widow: Grisham is Back in the Courtroom with a Twist

It’s been a minute since I’ve dove into a John Grisham story. I have such great memories of being in high school and devouring The Rainmaker, The Firm, and The Client. There’s just something about a Grisham legal thriller that hits the spot. So, when I saw he was heading back to the courtroom with The Widow, I picked it up on release day.

I’m happy to report: the master is back, and he brought a new trick with him.

The Widow follows Simon Latch, a small-time Virginia lawyer whose life and marriage are basically running on empty. Then, Eleanor Barnett—an elderly widow—walks into his office. She needs a new will for a secret fortune, and suddenly Simon thinks he’s hit the jackpot.

It’s looking like it’s going to be a good year for Simon after all–until Eleanor is murdered, and he becomes the primary suspect.

But this isn’t just a legal battle; it’s Grisham’s first true “whodunnit.”

The first half is a bit of a slow burn. Grisham takes his time setting the stage, and if I’m being honest, it felt a little tedious in spots. But stick with it! The second half is a total reward for that commitment. It’s packed with classic courtroom drama, “lawyers behaving badly,” and a mystery that actually kept me guessing.

Content Guide for Parents & Discerning Readers:

Age Recommendation: 16+

Language: Very mild. Grisham stays pretty clean here compared to most modern thrillers.

Violence: Low. While there is a murder mystery at the heart of the plot, the focus is on intellectual and legal suspense rather than graphic descriptions.

Sexual Content: None.

Thematic Intensity: Moderate. Focuses on the exploitation of the elderly and legal corruption.

The Verdict:

4 Stars. If you’ve missed the “old school” Grisham vibes, this is a must-read. It’s a fun, rewarding mystery that proves he’s still got the magic touch in the courtroom.

Happy Reading!
