The Framed! Trilogy: Sherlock Holmes Meets Middle School

If you’re looking for a fun, smart mystery series to hand to your middle-grade reader—or even to read aloud as a family—look no further than the Framed! trilogy by James Ponti.

The series follows 12-year-old Florian Bates, who just moved to Washington, D.C. from Italy. Florian has a “superpower” called T.O.A.S.T. (the Theory of All Small Things). It’s not magic; it’s just the habit of paying incredibly close attention to tiny details that everyone else misses. Along with his best friend Margaret, Florian ends up as a covert asset for the FBI, using T.O.A.S.T. to solve everything from art heists at the National Gallery to international spy rings.

What I loved about this series is how it makes “being observant” feel cool. It’s like a modernized, more sophisticated Encyclopedia Brown. The friendship between Florian and Margaret is fantastic—it’s a great example of a solid boy/girl friendship based on mutual respect and shared brainpower.

Now, as an adult, you do have to suspend a healthy amount of disbelief. We’re talking about 12-year-olds solving crimes that the entire FBI can’t crack. But honestly? It’s not written for my 49-year-old brain! It’s written for the kids, and for them, it is pure wish-fulfillment gold.

It’s like a fruit and spinach smoothie: it tastes great, it’s fun to consume, but it’s secretly full of good stuff like character lessons, respect for parents, and critical thinking.

Content Guide for Parents & Discerning Readers:

Age Recommendation: All Ages. (Perfect for independent readers ages 10-12).

Language: None. Perfectly clean.

Violence: Mild. There are high-stakes moments (like Florian being “kidnapped” by the mafia), but it’s handled in a way that is exciting rather than traumatizing for the target age group.

Sexual Content: None.

Thematic Intensity: Low. Very safe, fun, and adventurous.

The Verdict:

4 Stars. A “Must-Read” for middle-grade mystery fans. It’s clever, fast-paced, and might actually teach your kids to start paying more attention to the world around them.

Happy Reading!
