My Lady Jane (The Lady Janies, #1)
By: Cynthia Hand, Brodi Ashton, and Jodi Meadows
My Rating: FIVE out of FIVE Stars!
Best for: 14 and up

Brodi Ashton, Cynthia Hand, and Jodi Meadows: Authors. Friends. Committed to fixing history by rewriting one sad story at a time…

…and killing it.

My Lady Jane re-imagines the story of Lady Jane Grey, who was Queen of England for 9 days before she was deposed by “off-with-her-head” Queen (Bloody) Mary.

A brief history lesson: Edward the VI broke tradition and declared Jane Grey his successor over his step sisters Mary and Elizabeth. Upon Edward’s death, Mary convinced supporters that Edward was way wrong, cut off Jane’s head, and lived as Queen for 5 years before she died. Then Elizabeth took over, reigned for 44 years, and became known as the first great Queen of England. Poor Jane Grey was a pawn in the royal family’s power games, and it cost her lovely head at the age of 17.

Tragic story.

The authors of My Plain Jane re-wrote that tragic story, wonderfully re-imagined a happy ending for Jane, added some magic, sweet romance, and a whole bunch of witty humor that made me wish fiction wasn’t fiction.

No language, no sex, no violence. Quite of bit of chaste (and silly) nakedness–some people in this alternative history can turn themselves into an animal, and when they change back into their human forms, they aren’t wearing clothes. Best for 14 and up.

Recommended for anyone who loves to read fun books, enjoys happy endings, appreciates historical fiction, likes to laugh, and prefers reading stories that make you smile.

If you’re boring, prefer things that make you sad, and tend to avoid things that might make you happy, I suggest you go read a cancer book.

Happy reading!
