Oh Auri…

If you have read and loved both The Name of the Wind and A Wise Man’s Fear, then The Slow Regard of Silent Things is something you simply must read.

If you have NOT read The Name of the Wind and A Wise Man’s Fear, you should know two things. 1) You must not read The Slow Regard of Silent Things. It will make you crazy. 2) You have done yourself an immense disservice. You must read them immediately. Stop here and go read.  Come back here when you’re done.

For those of you who know and love Auri, this book is a treasure. I loved it. For around 150 pages we spend 7 days inside of Auri’s world, both in her thoughts as well as in the Underthing–and oh my, there is a lot going on.

I think we all suspected, but Auri is broken. She knows it and embraces it. Through her thoughts and actions we begin to scratch her surface, only to find more depth and mystery there than she is ready to share. That’s part of the magic of Auri.

Do you remember watching Jaws for the first time? You knew there was something just under the water reeking havoc, but you never actually got a clear view of it until the very end. There is some kind of Jaws under the service of Auri, and at some point in the future I have a very strong suspicion we will get a good look at it. But for now, all we get is a glimpse.

There are clues of something dark in her past. There are signs that she is powerful. It’s obvious that she’s a treasure.
