Sept 2016 Update:
I no longer support or recommend this series. Book 5 has taken a very unfortunate turn towards graphic sexual content that is not appropriate for the young readers this author and publisher are targeting. Reader beware!
4/5 stars
The Assassin and the Pirate Lord (Throne of Glass, #0.1) by Sarah J. Maas
Second reading in preparation for the last book in the series. Honestly, it was better than the first time!
Aug 3 to Aug 6 2012
Really fun! The Assassin and the Pirate Lord is a light and easy read. There is a lot of action in these 64 or so pages, and the author does a good job of developing the characters in just a few words. What I mostly love is that Sarah J. Maas has created these novellas as prequals to her first novel, The Throne of Glass. My understanding is that they set up the backstory and introduce you to the characters of the novel. I think it’s a brilliant idea and a great way to step outside of the accepted formula.
Celaena looks like she is going to be a strong female lead character. It’s too soon to tell just yet, but we may be seeing the next Katniss!
