Redshirts: A Novel with Three Codas
By: John Scalzi
My Rating: Four out of Five Stars
Best for: Adults only
Now THIS is a book for scifi geeks!
If you’ve ever watched Star Trek, you know what happens to the guys in the red shirts–they’re always the ones who die! The main characters always wore blue or gold…and somehow they always made it. But those poor Ensign’s in those red shirts….
This is the story told from those Redshirts point of view. Andy Dahl and his friends are new members of the Intrepid, the flagship starcruiser of Universal Union–or Dub U, and those of us in the know like to call it. It doesn’t take long for them to realize the death rate among red-shirt-wearing new guys is weirdly high. As Redshirts themselves, they have a vested interest in getting to the bottom of things. Their investigation leads to so great and unexpected geeky results, and a really fun story is the result.
Unfortunately there is a ton of (im)mature language; it definitely pushed the limits of what I’ll tolerate. I can’t recommend this book without that disclaimer. But if you are okay with being cursed at, you’ll have fun with this book!
Happy Reading!
