What are some of your favorite YA series that are more obscure? My oldest is about to turn 20. She still loves YA or cleaner adult fiction. She’s read ALL the biggies, reads really quickly, and we like to load her up for birthdays and holidays. Any recommendations?

Here are some off the beaten path YA/Clean Adult/well-written Middle Grade I came up with:
–The Immortal Descendants series by April White
–Beyond (book 1) and Before (book 2) by Catina Haverlock and Angela Larkin
–The Lady Janies books (currently there are 3) by Brodi Ashton, Cynthia Hand and Jodi Meadows
–The Wizards of Once series by Cressida Cowell
–The Queen’s Thief series by Megan Whalen Turner
–Scythe trilogy by Neal Shusterman
–Skyward series by Brandon Sanderson
–The 7 1/2 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle by Stuart Turton
–The Goblin Emperor by Katherine Addison
–The Winternight Trilogy by Katherine Arden
–Lockwood & Co series by Jonathan Stroud
–The Luck Uglies by Paul Durham
–Mr. Penumbra’s 24 Hour Bookstore by Robin Sloan
–Insignia Trilogy by SJ Kincaid
–The Great Library series by Rachel Caine
–The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman
–The Legand of Eli Monpress by Rachel Aaron
–Chaos Walking by Patrick Ness
–The Bern Saga by Hugh Howey
–The First Girl Child and The Second Blind Son by Amy Harmon
–Daughter of Smoke and Bone Trilogy by Laini Taylor
–Renegades by Marissa Meyer
–Strange the Dreamer Duology by Laini Taylor
Okay, I’ll stop there…there are lots more if you need more. Just let me know!

Here are additional recos from our Book Club community:

I immediately thought of Poison Study and Ink Death. I have two clean dystopian series (one with an adult MC and one with a traditional teen MC). Tier Trilogy and Unreal series (Unreal just launched – book 2 is out beginning of November).

Apparently I like Jennifer L. Green Angel and Green Witch by Alice Hoffman. All the Truth That’s in Me by Julie Berry, The Here and Now by Anne Brashares, The Dairy Queen series by Catherine Gilbert Murdock, The Bomb by Theodore Taylor, The Trylle Trilogy by Amanda Hocking.

Since I know YOU would never suggest this for her, ALL Jane Austen. They are well written, often funnier than you’d think and will make her want to get married (just kidding!). And if you don’t want to do them all, definitely start with Pride and Prejudice or Emma. Plus there’s the added bonus that after she finishes the book, there are approximately 12 movie versions of each book!
