The Value of a Star: Ratings Explained

Theodore Boone: John Grisham’s “Idiot’s Guide to the Law” for Tweens
I’ve had some great memories with John Grisham books over the years (shoutout to high school me devouring The Firm), so I was very curious to see how he would fare as a Middle Grade/YA author. The verdict? He did alright!
The story follows 13-year-old Theo Boone. Theo is an only child to two lawyers, has a dog named Judge, and spends his free time at the courthouse. He’s basically a middle-schooler with the soul of a seasoned trial attorney. When a sensational murder trial rocks his small town, Theo finds himself dragged into the middle of it because he knows a secret that could change everything.
As an adult reader, you definitely have to let go of some of your grown up sensibility. It’s a bit of a stretch to imagine a 13-year-old with such a single-minded obsession with the law—but hey, we accept adults with those same obsessions in thrillers all the time, so why not a kid? Once I got past that, I really enjoyed the ride.
What I appreciated most is that this book secretly acts as “Law 101” for kids. Grisham explains legal procedures—mortgages, foreclosures, jury systems—in simple, engaging terms without being boring. I could actually see kids wanting to become lawyers or judges after reading this! It’s a great page-turner with all the Grisham wit and dry humor intact, just tailored for a younger audience.
Content Guide for Parents & Discerning Readers:
Age Recommendation: 12+ (Generally safe for 10-11, but the themes are mature).
Language: None. Perfectly clean.
Violence: Very mild. While the plot revolves around a murder trial, there is no explicit violence on the pages.
Sexual Content: None.
Thematic Intensity: Moderate. It deals with a murder trial (a husband accused of strangling his wife) and some light rule-breaking (sneaking around for evidence).
Note on Behavior: Theo does occasionally lie to parents or sneak around to uncover the truth, which is typical for a kid detective story.
The Verdict:
4 Stars. A cute and clever introduction to the legal world. If you have a tween who isn’t quite ready for The Pelican Brief but loves a good mystery, this is the perfect starting point. I’m straight off to start book two!
Happy Reading!
