My rating: Intentionally Not Rated
I’m going to gracefully back out of this one.
I got through 10% and realized I’m not quite adult enough for that much adult content. I kept hoping the F-bomb count would starting ticking down. Unfortunately, it ticked up in stead.
I probably should have guessed that would happen after the women ate that dude with her vagina.
I’m totally bummed. I’ve loved everything Neil Gaiman, and I can tell this story was on its way to awesome. I’ll intentionally leave this review unrated.
Looking to experience the Neil Gaiman magic without the four-letter color? Try Stardust, Coraline, The Graveyard Book, Neverwhere, or The Ocean at the End of the Lane. I love them all.
Happy Reading!

Totally agree with all of this. I am definitely a bigger fan of Gaiman’s PG works. His MG novella “Fortunately the Milk” made both my son and me roll off the couch laughing.

I’ll have to look that one up!

It’s a great one to read aloud with older kids (especially 5th-6th grade, who may still accept reading with parents). The humor is clean and irreverent and it’s just so much fun.

I read it back in ’11 and haven’t read another Gaiman since.

Well, I’m glad I didn’t start with this one. You ought to give those others I mentioned a try.

I did read Coraline and enjoyed it almost as much as the movie 🙂

I loved The Ocean at the End of the Lane and couldn’t understand why I didn’t love American Gods. I’d get into the story for a short while and then would lose my way. I’ll have to give more of his work a try.

Haha,I remember that vagina scene! From what I heard, it will also be in the TV show.
I enjoyed reading ‘American Gods’ but don’t feel like I have to read the sequel. And the ending was disappointing.

Good to know I saved myself from a bad ending!

Use of particular words usually doesn’t turn me off a story, but the man-eating vagina is just too much for me. Thank you for the heads up!

From others I understand it was a one time occurrence that happened early in the book. If you don’t mind the language, you might consider checking it out. It’s actually a very good book. He has lots of other great stuff though that you don’t have to question why you’re reading it, so you might check that out instead

Oh I’ve got my eyes on several of his other books, so I’m not put out by him as an author.

I think it was ok, didn’t enjoy it as the other books. I loved The Ocean at the End of the Lane and Neverwhere and still remain my favourite.

Yep, I loved those too. Have you read Stardust or Coraline? They are great as well.

I forced myself to finish this and I just hated it. I couoldn’t get into it at all, I found it boring and it never managed to work for me. It has prevented me from giving his other works a try but I do have a copy of Neverwhere somewhere so I might give this one a go!
